Anxiety: getting informed
Anxiety disorders are a group of mental disorders characterized by feelings of anxiety and fear, where anxiety is a worry about future events and fear is a reaction to current events. There are various forms of anxiety disorders, including generalized anxiety disorder, phobic disorder, panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder. While each has its own characteristics and symptoms, they all include symptoms of anxiety.
Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is the most common form of anxiety disorders. It is an anxiety disorder that is characterized by excessive, uncontrollable and often irrational worry. This excessive worry often interferes with daily functioning, as individuals suffering GAD typically anticipate disaster, and are overly concerned about everyday matters such as health issues, money, death, family problems, friendship problems, interpersonal relationship problems, or work difficulties. Individuals often exhibit a variety of physical symptoms, including fatigue, fidgeting, headaches, nausea, numbness in hands and feet, muscle tension, muscle aches, difficulty swallowing, bouts of difficulty breathing, difficulty concentrating, trembling, twitching, irritability, agitation, sweating, restlessness, insomnia, hot flashes, and rashes and inability to fully control the anxiety. For the diagnosis of this disorder, symptoms must last at least six months.
The cause of generalized anxiety disorder is partly genetic but may also be due to drug use including alcohol and caffeine, as well as withdrawal from certain drugs.
Common treatment options include lifestyle changes, therapy, and medications. Medications are typically recommended only if other measures are not effective. Anxiety disorders occur about twice as often in females as males.
The symptoms of anxiety disorders vary depending on the type of anxiety disorder, but general symptoms include:
