Auriculotherapy is the stimulation of the auricle of the external ear for the diagnosis and treatment of health conditions in other parts of the body. The basic concept in auriculotherapy is that nerves in the skin overlying specific areas of the external ear correspond to specific parts of the brain which has reflex connections to the body. Therefore, the auricle is regarded as a micro-system of the whole body.

Because every part of the external ear connects through the micro-system to every part of the body, a wide variety of health problems are relieved by auriculotherapy. Almost all health conditions can be affected to some degree by stimulating reactive ear points. The most effective treatment pathway is through the neuroendocrine reflexes. Therefore, the most commonly reported uses of auriculotherapy have been for detoxification from addictive substances, psycho-emotional disorders due to neurotransmitters imbalance of the brain (such as anxiety, depression, insomnia, stress), control of appetite, loss of weight, and control of chronic pain.

Auriculotherapy can be applied by needle (the traditional method as in acupuncture), manual pressure (referred to as auricular acupressure or ear reflexology), or modern technology such as soft laser, electrical stimulation, magnets, ear pellets. The most effective method is soft laser stimulation. The soft laser generates certain wavelength that effectively penetrates the skin surface and stimulates the nerve endings in the acupoints without pain and trauma to the skin, and the stimulation is proven to be more effective than other methods.

The word LASER is an acronym from Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. A laser is a source of light that emits extremely pure light. Pure light means light that only has a single wavelength, not an entire spectrum. The light from a laser is very tidy and well organized. In specialized terminology, laser light is described as coherent.
